Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has been fined £250,000 by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) after its online PlayStation network was compromised by hackers, causing the dissemination of user account details in contravention of data protection law.
The entertainment giant's network which is used by gamers to play PlayStation games online against each other was hacked into in April 2011. The attack resulted in the release of user account details including names, addresses, e-mail addresses, dates of birth and account passwords. It is believed that user payment details were also put at risk as a result of the attack.
